About Young Rider Camps

Twin Oaks offers week-long summer day camps and Saturday fall and winter camps for children ages 5 through 10 who have seldom ridden and are looking for an introduction to riding basics in a safe and fun environment.

Fall and Winter Saturday Camps

Fall and Winter Young Riders Camps consist of one Saturday per month instead of week-long sessions to accomodate the school schedule. Riders may register for as many of the Fall day camps as they want. Even though Fall and Winter camp is only one day each month, each camper will get time on the horse with an instructor. See the "Camp Activities" section below for a full list of other activities offered during this camp.

Summer and Spring Break Week-Long Camps

Riders come to the stables for 5 days (Monday through Friday) to learn what it's like to own and ride your own horse. The cost is $199.00. See below for a list of activities.

Camp Activities

Each rider learns basic horse care skills, such as grooming, hoof cleaning, tack care, barn chores, and how to maintain the well being of horses. Each child will ride every day and they will receive individual attention while riding. The emphasis of this camp is on safety and respect for the horse and his care. Since the campers are young, the riding is taught by an experienced instructor with riders on the horse one at a time. The instructor stays with the child while on the horse and helps them maintain proper position while guiding the horse. The 30 minute riding time is shared by the group. 20-25 campers are enrolled in each session. Campers are organized into groups of 5-6 and rotate through four 30 minute stations:

  1. Grooming
  2. Riding
  3. Horse chores
  4. Craft activity teaching horse care

Equipment

Camp participants will please wear the following:

  • Long pants
  • Sturdy boots (or sneakers)
  • Riding helmet

Riding helmets can be purcahsed at Dover Saddlery. Riding helmets are made by Troxel. Riders may borrow a helmet from Twin Oaks if they don't have one.
